When A Dental Bridge Is Not Going To Cover The Expanse Of Open Space In Your Mouth

Lois Murray

As you get older, your teeth become more brittle. It is part of aging, but if you are taking good care of your teeth and your gums, you can help to prevent the premature loss of your teeth. However, if you lost three or more teeth in a row, you will have a very wide gap in your mouth. You could get a partial denture, but most partial dentures are difficult to fit and keep in place over gaps that wide.

A dental bridge will not work either, because dental bridges need at least one major healthy tooth to which they can anchor, and then the fake crowns are used to fill in the gap. With three or more teeth missing, the bridge does not have anything it can hold onto, so the bridge would not work. Yet, that does not mean you have to walk around with this large gap in your teeth or smile. Here is what can be done about those missing teeth.

Implants

Implants easily cover and make up for all of the teeth you have missing. They are the most logical, most natural-looking, and most durable and long-lasting dental solution for your particular problem. They are not cheap, but there are several ways that you can finance and pay for them. Once you have all of your implants inserted into your mouth, no one can tell that they are not real teeth, or that you ever had a large gap in your mouth.

Implant Bridges

Dentists are crafty. They took a common dental implant and transformed it into a dental bridge. What they do is insert one or two implants into your mouth to act as the "natural" teeth that would normally be the anchors for a bridge. Then they create a bridge and affix it to the implant. If you only have a gap created by three missing teeth, the dentist inserts an implant to the right or left of the center of the gap. The other two fake crowns that make up the bridge are then connected to and secured by the implant.

For patients who really cannot afford extensive implant expenditures, this far less expensive alternative is one worth looking into. You pay for the one implant (instead of several implants) and then you pay for what it would normally cost you for a bridge. The difference is usually several thousand dollars.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
