Tips To Help Improve Your Oral Health For Your Next Dental Check-Up

Lois Murray

Before you begin to dread your next dental appointment because you know you have not been taking the best care of your teeth and gums, take a moment to consider the simple practices you can implement into your day to help improve your teeth and gums. Here are some easy habits you can use to improve the condition of your oral health.

Try Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a practice of swishing oil inside your mouth that has been used around the world for centuries and is now becoming popular in the United States. You can pull oil using coconut oil, which traps bacteria, toxins, and other impurities from the interior of your mouth so you can then, spit it into the trash. Oil pulling with coconut oil traps Streptococcus Mutans, which is the bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease. The coconut oil will also remove plaque from your teeth, reduce and eliminate gum inflammation, heals your gums, and whitens your teeth.

First thing in the morning before you brush your teeth, eat breakfast or drink anything, place one to two teaspoons of coconut oil into your mouth. It will melt immediately so you can begin to swish it around inside your mouth. After 20 minutes, the oil will have trapped as many impurities as possible, so you can spit it from your mouth. Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth, as usual for the day.

Drink Green Tea

Green tea leaves made into tea or taken in a supplement are helpful in improving the health of your teeth and gums, as well. Green tea contains an antioxidant called catechin, which helps boost the healing and blood flow in your gums.

It has been found through studies that drinking green tea heals gum inflammation to reduce gum and Periodontal disease. From each cup of green tea you drink, there are several ways your mouth can have improvement and healing from gum disease you are experiencing. For example, any pockets along your gum line will reduce in size and begin to heal and the gum tissue recession will stop, and you can also notice a reduction of gum bleeding when you brush and floss your teeth.

To get the benefits from daily green tea, you can take it in a supplement, which you can find at most health supplement stores. You can also brew your own green tea to drink. You can find green tea for brewing at many grocery stores and also at health food stores.

Use these two methods to help improve the health of your gums and teeth, in addition to talking with your family dentist about your oral health.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
