2 Tips For Maintaining Dental Implants If You Are A Senior

Lois Murray

Dental implant maintenance is extremely important at any age. However, it becomes even more important the older that you get. As you get older, your body begins to change, and you may experience things like dry mouth and bone loss. Dry mouth will lead to increased amounts of bacteria development. Bacteria development can easily compromise the health of your teeth and gums. In addition, the better that you maintain your dental implants, the longer they will last. Keeping up with your dental implant care as a senior can be a bit more difficult. Fortunately, there are a few tips that you can use to make sure that you do not fall behind.

Change Up Your Diet

Depending on how old you are, your diet may already consist of foods that are more delicate and gentle on your teeth. However, if you are still indulging in your favorite sticky foods and hard meats, then this can be damaging to your dental implants. Dental implants are constructed in order to last through a number of years of regular tear. However, there are some foods that can speed up this process. Sticky foods pull against the implant, and if they are eaten regularly,  then they can loosen the implant. In addition, hard foods can result in cracks throughout your dental implant and natural teeth. If you continuously eat these foods, then you will notice your dental implants will begin to fail within a short amount of time. You can prevent this by transitioning into a softer diet.

Use Oral Rinses More Frequently

People usually remember to brush their teeth but may avoid using an oral rinse. An oral rinse is a good temporary tooth cleaner if you do not have your toothbrush and toothpaste near. An oral rinse will help to kill the bacteria that often lodges itself in your dental implant. If you are often eating meals outside of your home, then it is important to carry an oral rinse with you at all times. Look for an antibacterial rinse in order to ensure the bad bacteria is killed. Make sure that you work the rinse around your teeth and dental implants for a few minutes before proceeding.

If you want to enjoy your dental implants for years to come, then proper and thorough maintenance is going to be key. Use these tips to make sure that you are able to achieve this goal.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
