2 Tips For Recovering From Maxillofacial Surgery For Your Wisdom Teeth

Lois Murray

Maxillofacial surgery is used to treat a number of issues in the face and jaw area including impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth grow in at an angle that creates a flap where bacteria and other contaminants can collect. Impacted wisdom teeth that are left in can result in bacterial infection. Once the maxillofacial surgery is completed, the recovery process is just as important as the actual procedure. If your surgical site is unable to heal, this can result in infection. Fortunately, there are a few recovery tips that you can use after you have your wisdom teeth removed during maxillofacial surgery.

Only Eat Soft Foods During the First Few Days

Immediately after the surgery, you may experience bleeding in your extraction sites. Once the blood stops, the surgical site should clot. The clot is designed to protect the area while it heals. Therefore, eating foods that are hard on your mouth can puncture this clot. If the clot is damaged, then this can cause an extreme pain called dry socket. As a result, sticking to soft foods during the first few days of your recovery will help to ensure that the clot remains healthy. Slow cooked foods and warm soups are good examples of foods that you should gravitate toward during this time in order to keep your mouth healthy.

Use an Antibacterial Rinse Daily

One of the hardest things about recovering from a maxillofacial surgery designed for your wisdom teeth is finding a way to keep your mouth entirely clean. The surgical site should remain free of food and debris during this time, but this can be difficult to do with a toothbrush. Using a toothbrush in that area can aggravate the site or even puncture the clot. Therefore, using an antibacterial rinse instead will ensure that your mouth remains clean without causing any harm. A daily antibacterial rinse can be created at home using rosemary. The herb is commonly used for herbal remedies because of its antibacterial properties. Simply fill a cup with boiling hot water and place rosemary in the cup. Allow the oregano to steep until the water cools, then use the rinse to cleanse your entire mouth.  Avoid using too much force to swish the rinse around your mouth as this can harm the clot near your surgical site.

A healthy recovery from maxillofacial surgery is important to protecting the other teeth in your mouth. For more information, check it out.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
