What You Should Know About Toothaches

Lois Murray

A toothache can put a fast end to a good day. Once a toothache sets in it can cause you a great deal of pain, make it hard for you to eat, affect the way you speak and even cause your face to become swollen. It's always best to avoid getting a toothache altogether. However, if you do find yourself or your child at the receiving end of one then you want to do your best to get relief from the pain it can cause. This article will give you the information you need to understand how toothaches work and what you can do to control the pain.

Preventing a Toothache

The best way to prevent yourself from getting a toothache is to take great care of your teeth to begin with. Follow correct oral hygiene habits by brushing at least twice a day, flossing after meals and using mouthwash before bed. Cavities, tooth decay, gum disease and an abscessed tooth can all lead to toothaches.

You also want to decrease your chances of damaging your teeth in other ways that can lead to toothaches. Chewing ice, chewing on pen caps and using your teeth to open packages are a few examples of things you can do that put your teeth at risk of damage. Also, getting a tongue piercing or playing contact sports without a mouth guard can increase your chances of fracturing, chipping or completely breaking your teeth.

Controlling the Pain of a Toothache

As soon as you start to feel as if you may be getting a toothache, you want to act quickly. They can come on fast and hard, leaving you in a lot of discomfort. Take some over-the-counter pain reliever to take control of the pain.

You may also need more help with the toothache and this is where home remedies can help. Biting on a clove of garlic is known to take away the pain of a toothache. Also, soaking a cotton ball in clove oil and putting the cotton ball next to your aching tooth will help take the pain away.

The advice here will help you to prevent yourself or your child from getting toothaches and help you to know what to do about them if they do occur. This way, you can stay on top of things and help yourself or your child to get through the pain until the dentist is available to get you in. For your child, consider seeing a dentist that specializes in pediatric dentistry, such as A Wild Smile, as the staff may be better experienced in easing the fears of smaller children.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
