New Methods for Rejuvenating Teeth After Gum Disease

Lois Murray

Traditionally, treating gum disease has largely involved slow techniques that could only do so much to repair and fully clean the area. Here are some new technologies that can make it possible to not only prevent the infection of underlying bones and ligaments from gum disease, but also restore them.

Immune System Methods

Most gum disease is caused by bacteria living in your mouth. One type of bacteria that causes these diseases is called P. gingivalis. Research into this bacteria shows that one of the reasons why it causes so much trouble is because this bacteria actually gets help from your own immune system.

Your immune system is tricked into attacking gums around the bacteria which causes them to become inflamed. Researchers also noticed that a protein called C3 from the immune system is one of the proteins responsible for causing inflammation.

By breeding mice that lacked C3, they showed that the mice had a considerably reduced risk of damage and bone loss from gum disease. The researchers are hopeful that this discovery will lead to treatments that stop mechanisms in your own body that can promote gum disease, potentially returning your gums back to normal.

Bone One Session Treatment

The advanced stages of gum disease occur when the infection spreads to ligaments, bones and other tissue in your mouth. The traditional approach to preventing this from happening is to clean one-quarter of the mouth at a time. The problem with this approach is that it usually takes at least an entire month to work, and this is assuming that you go to weekly appointments.

With the BOST approach, you get one appointment that does everything in just 4 or 5 hours. This technique is combined with techniques that the patient does themselves which involve exposing more of the mouth to oxygen. This is because most bacteria in this area can only grow in places where there is no oxygen.

Another advantage to this approach is that it completely cleans out gums of all bacteria in one go, reaching all places in the mouth. It is like rejuvenation for your mouth because bacteria have to start from the beginning, completely recolonizing your mouth from square one again.

Many patients credit the technique with saving their teeth. This includes patients who are rigorous about dental hygiene because some of this disease is simply genetic. Learn more about your options by consulting resources like http://www.neufamilydental.com.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
