6 Tips For Caring For Dentures

Lois Murray

If some or all of your teeth have fallen out, you may have gotten dentures. These prosthetic devices are removable and look just like natural teeth. They can take a little while to get used to, but you'll eventually adjust to them. To help your dentures last a long time, it is important to take good care of them. Here are six tips for caring for dentures.

Clean Your Dentures Every Day

Just because dentures are not your real teeth doesn't mean that you should not clean them regularly. They can still accumulate plaque and bacteria. Remember to brush them every day with a soft bristle toothbrush and mildly abrasive toothpaste.

Remove Your Dentures Before Bedtime

Wearing dentures can irritate your mouth tissues after a while. That's why it is important to remove your dentures before you go to bed every night. Soak your dentures in denture cleaner overnight to remove stains and plaque and give your mouth plenty of time to recover.

Protect Your Dentures

Dentures can be quite fragile. When you take them out of your mouth, you will want to be very careful with them. While you are cleaning your dentures, put a towel under them in case they fall. In addition, keep them out of reach from small children and pets.

Pay Attention to Changes in Fit

Dentures have come a long way in recent years and shouldn't feel uncomfortable in your mouth. If you have noticed that your dentures have been irritating your mouth, it is a sign that the gums and bones in your mouth have changed. Poorly fitting dentures can lead to pains and sores on your gums. Have your dentist adjust your dentures as soon as possible.

Clean Your Mouth After Removing Dentures

After you take your dentures out, it is important to thoroughly clean your natural teeth and gums with a soft-bristle toothbrush and tooth paste. Doing this will help remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth, reducing the risk of gum disease and other oral health problems.

Visit Your Dentist

If you have dentures, it's even more important to see your dentist every six months. He or she will thoroughly clean your dentures and make sure they are still fitting properly.

If you follow these useful tips, your dentures will remain in good shape for a long time. If you have additional questions about taking care of your dentures, talk to your dentist.

About Me
Straight Teeth in Less Time

I had braces when I was a kid. Back then, you had to wear those metal wires and rubber bands for what seemed like forever. When I saw that my child’s teeth were going to be crooked like mine, I was dreading the years of braces and orthodontist appointments and limited diets that I saw stretching ahead of us. I was pleased to find out that braces today are very different from braces when I was a kid. They don’t need to be worn for nearly as long, and they aren’t as intrusive, either. My daughter got braces that can barely be seen, and she can remove them when she eats, so she doesn’t have to give up her favorite foods. I was so impressed that I started a blog to talk about modern day tooth straightening techniques. Braces have come a long way.
